Influence of Ww1 on the Artwork of Early 20th Century
On August 1st 1914, Germany declared war on Russia, and on the 3rd, declared war on France. Starting at the top of the previous page the first piece of artwork I chose to review is Max Beckmanns piece Der Kriegsausbruch (Declaration of War), created in 1914 as the declarations of war had just been announced. This is a drawing depicting the reaction of passers-by in Berlin to the news of war being declared. I chose this piece specifically because of the sketchy style of drawing. I find that the looseness of his lines give the piece a feeling of anxiousness or even stress that I imagine many of the citizens depicted in the piece were feeling at the time. Questionnaires Introduction According to the University of Utah a genetic disorder is described as a disease that is caused by an abnormality in an individualââ¬â¢s DNA. This means that there is a mutation present in the gene. It could be an elimination mutation, addition mutation or even a change in an entire chromosome. In the Life Science class we were given a research project about genetic diseases which we were to carry out. I chose Huntingtonââ¬â¢s disease particularly because I had never heard of it and I found it highly beneficial to learn more about it. In this research project I have clearly outlined how I have carried out the entire project, I have provided information about Huntingtonââ¬â¢s disease, I have included literary reviews on the articles I read, and I have also provided information about the Huntingtonââ¬â¢s Association of South Africa (HASA). Methodology In order to be able to accomplish this research project I needed to gather information about my chosen genetic disorder (Huntingtonââ¬â¢s disease). During the reconstruction era over two thousand African Americans served in federal, state, and local offices. Information on these individuals is difficult to find, seeing as during this time black lawmakers were condemned as subhuman, and in no need of documentation. Eric Foner, author of Black Politicians in the Reconstruction Era, stated that of the two thousand he only found about 1465 for his book. We will write a custom essay sample on African American Politicians or any similar topic only for you Order Now A great deal of the information on these men and the offices they held was obscure and incorrect. Many scholars had false information about the education level of these African American lawmakers. For example, many scholars claimed that most black delegates to the Georgia convention were illiterate, actually twenty-two of these thirty-seven could read and write. This was impressive seeing as it was against the law in many states for African Americans to be taught how to read or write. The basic research on these politicians was not done because these scholars thought they knew all they needed to know. These lawmakers were black; many were ex-slaves, so they must have been ignorant, corrupt, and incompetent, this was the stereotype, but it was not so! Many of the African American leaders saw fit to educate themselves. Men like John Roy Lynch, who took time off from his photographerâ⬠s studio to observe a white classroom from across an alley. He continued this until he had mastered all of the classes taught there. Situations like this show the desire and determination these men had to learn. He used this training to become speaker of the Mississippi house and later a member of congress. These are only two of the many examples of African Americans who self educated themselves in a time when African Americans were banned from education. Others did have a formal education. In South Carolina, State Treasurer Francis L. Cardozo attended Glasgow and London. He was a minister in New Haven and a principal for the School for Blacks in Charleston. These were better credentials than some white politicians had. Economically black politicians were in no way reaping the monetary rewards that Conservatives and white carpetbaggers enjoyed. While African Americans status impressive compared to other freedmen, most could not translate political power into a share of the economic growth of their states. Even prominent leaders such as Hiram Revels, who was the first the first black man to serve in the United States Senate sometimes found it necessary to take small loans from white politicians to meet every day expense. The reconstruction era was a difficult time for African American politicians. In a time when negative stereotypes where all too common, and the color of your skin determined your level of intelligence in the eyes of many. Black leaders had to work twice as hard to accomplish half as much. An extremely relevant point, and a credit to the African American politicians was the fact that there was a very small amount of vindictiveness in their actions and words. They had no dreams or desires to take advantage, or become greedy with the power they were beginning to acquire. They seemed more fixated on receiving what they thought they were entitled to. Beverly Nash, a member of the South Carolina convention, asserted in his first speech, ââ¬Å"the white man is a true friend of the black man. He went on to say, ââ¬Å"I you could see the scroll of the society that banner represents, you would see the white man and the black man standing with their arms locked together, as the type of friendship we desire. â⬠Even when some leaders such as Henry McNeal Turner, who was almost universally disliked by whites, still did what he could to assist in helping the white economy recover its economic strength. Even after all that was done to them, the black leaders held no resentment, and worked for the benefites of blacks and whites as a whole. In conclusion, there are many misconceptions about African American leaders during the era of reconstruction. From their level of education, to the positions they held, and the lifestyles they lead. Black leaders were equally, if not more qualified than their white counter parts for political positions. Unfortunately they were not being compensated in the same manner as the white politicians. Part of That World free essay sample
It was early morning. I entered the small living room, reluctantly, and sat on the floor. I could hear the tires crunch the gravel as my mom pulled out of the driveway, and the chatter of the younger children in the next room. I glanced back at the window and wished that I could have just stayed in the car, perhaps stowed away in the trunk; at least my car was familiar. I knew that even if I stayed at that house for eternity it would never be that kind of familiar. I squinted my eyes to see the clock in the kitchen. It was 8:00, and my mother would not be back until 3:00. Until that time came I could do nothing about it. I could not hop in a car and drive myself away, I could not go live with a friend, I could not go home, but I could pretend. We will write a custom essay sample on Part of That World or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I pulled out The Little Mermaid from the shelf and asked if I could watch it. Suddenly I was no longer a homesick eight year old stuck in an unfamiliar environment; I was a little mermaid living a fantastic adventure on land. For a few hours I could be somewhere other than where I was, and that made all the difference in the world. Needless to say, Disney movies were large part of my childhood, and I believe I have Alan Menken to thank for that. In the 1980s Disney was beginning to decline in popularity until The Little Mermaid was released, to which Alan Menken wrote the score. Alan Menken gave Disney a whole new dimension by adding the Broadway musical aspect that it is known for today, which inspired a multitude of other animated works produced in the 1990s, the works that would surround and inspire millions of people like myself. Through music he was able to touch my life and so many others. Through entertainment, he had the power to make time go faster, and slow down. He had the power to take an eight year old girl and transform them into a little mermaid. I was often afraid to admit to people what I wanted to be when I grow up. Coming from a family of nurses, electricians, and carpenters, the idea of being a composer seemed incredibly impractical. To avoid the questions and looks of shock, I often told people that I was not sure what I wanted to do with my life. To my surprise, I discovered that Alan Menken had come from a long line of dentists and had been in a similar boat. He wanted to be a serious composer, but it seemed unrealistic. He figured it was fate that he too would become dentist like his father, and his fathers father. For a while I was in denial, as he was, that I could actually make a living out of writing musicals. I think, in my heart, I have known my whole life that it was something I was meant to do, but it took a good fourteen years to convince my head. I am thankful that Alan Menken followed his dreams and became a composer. I will never be completely certain where the composer or lyricist in me came from specifically, whether it was from being read nursery rhymes every night as a child, or my fathers constant correction of my grammar and pronunciation, or his love for anything musical, but I know that had I not been exposed to the inspiring and extraordinary entertainment that I had growing up, I would not be the same. I want to be part of that world and give back to the industry that gave me so much. Everyone could use an escape, a chance to live a life other than their own, if only for a couple hours. That is what entertainment is to me, and I am driven to be able to bring that to other people.
